Final report of semi-detailed exploration in the Shurab Hg deposit, Kashmar
Shurab is located 46 Km away from the south of Kashmar and 250 Km far from south of Mashhad in the Khorasan Province. A decade ago, first time native mercury was reported from the area, after which extensive exploration activities started in the region. While the local peoples and experts reported the existence of mercury, former explorations were not led to any proper result. So the Industries and Miners Organization of Khorasan Province decided to explore the area by XG-5 instrument. This report presents the result of mentioned study.
Hg deposit ordinary occur near the large hydrothermal systems. They are found in tectonically active regions with young volcanism. The study area is located in the Central Iran, northern portion of Tabas block, in the Zirkuh Mountains. Because the Petrological studies did not reveal any evidence of mercury mineralization in the area, we used XG-5 instrument for sampling in three steps. At first step, a 100 Km2 area was samples through which a favorable zone was identified that is 8 Km2. In the second step, exploration was conducted on the scale 1:5000 including geological study and prospection with XG-5. 72 samples were collected 500 m by 500 m. after processing the data, three Hg anomalies identified. A 1 Km2 wide area was selected for 1:1000 studies by the network of 100 m * 100 m. Finally, a very favorable zone was identified that requires subsurface studied including drilling. Suitable sites for drilling suggested in the report.
