Detailed exploration of Qara-Aghaj titanium deposit, phase 1
According to the contract between the GSI and Kawoshgaran Consulting Engineers, detailed exploration of Qara-Aghaj titanium deposit was started at 1998. The result of field work, laboratory analysis, and other activities were presented in the separate reports. Ore dressing result is presented here. The first portion of this report is about the titanium itself. In laboratory analysis, four types of samples were studied by microscope. This study was conducted to determine the liberty degree of ilmenite. Ore dressing studies include:
- Manual magnetic separation of ore: 20 tests
- low intensity magnetic separation 4 tests with intensity of 0.5 to 1 ampere, 19 tests with intensity of 3 amperes
- high intensity magnetic separation including 2 tests with intensity of 50 amperes, 3 tests of 100 amperes, 3 tests of 300 amperes and 2 tests of 1000 amperes.
- Gravimetric separation using muzzle table: 10 tests
The result of these tests that was conducted on 83 samples shows that the concentrate is a mixture of ilmenite and titanomagnetite. Highest grade achieved was from the block F that was 26.1%. For more detailed test, a sample from this block was milled by cylcosizer down to 7 micron, divided in 10 polished sections. But it was not possible to completely separate the ilmenite from the titanomagnetite. Although the high grade ilmentie can not be achieved, but the concentrate has high TiO2 content that can be used in some industries including production of titanium slag and ferrotitanium.
