Prospecting for industrial clay minerals in Ilam province
The aim of this project is to prospect for industrial clay minerals in a 100 Km2 wide zone. The assessment includes sampling, analysis and geological mapping of a favorable zone at scale 1:20000. The study area is located in Shrivan-Chardavol county and involves these areas Halilan (53 Km2), Sarabele-Zirtang (63 Km2), Lumar – Gurab (18 Km2). Also the Gachsaran formation in the Ivan County (25 Km2) was sampled, but its marls have poor quality.
Preliminary investigations show that shales and marls of Halilan and Sarabele-Zirtang have higher quality than other studied areas. So there areas were selected for 1:20000 geology mapping. Totally, 141 cubic meters trench and hole were excavated.
Marl, shale and claystone are the sources of clay minerals in two mentioned counties. These rocks belong to Pabdeh, Gurpi, Amiran, Gachsaran and Aghajari formations. All of these formations have some degree of carbonate minerals. Shales and claystones have more than 10% CaO or MgO in their composition. This amount of CaO makes these clay-bearing rocks unsuitable for ceramic, porcelain, and refractory industries. Therefore only cement and brick-making industries can use these clay minerals.
