The report is the result of a project for prospecting dolomite and industrial soils in the Ilam Province. The project was conducted through interpretation of aerial photographs, preparing geology and mineral distribution maps, prospection along certain sections and areas, sampling, drawing geological cross section, stratigraphy column and assessment of indications. Clay and marl layers were studied for suitability for brick-making.
In order to examine the dolomitization of various formations, according to geology and topography maps, two areas of Banarushan (southwest of Ilam) and Vazirtang (northeast of province) were selected as models. In addition, ten sections were studied for controlling the appropriate layers. At whole 122 samples of dolomite were analyzed.
The study shows that dolomitization has occurred on part of Asmari and Shahbazan formations. The Shahbazan formation has more pure and homogenous dolomite. Dolomitized layers in the Asmari formation display large lateral and vertical changes. However, both formations contain suitable dolomite indications.
Based on the former data and executed study, the province has no favorable resource of clay soils, from quality and quantity viewpoints.
According to the widespread exposure of clay-bearing sedimentary formations, each formation was studied through sampling and analysis. In some places, shales of Amiran formation and marls of Aghajari can be used for brick making. However, the final decision requires more investigation.
