Preliminary prospection in the 1:50000 sheet of Meshkinshahr
The study area is located between 47.30 to 47.45 E and 38.15 to 38.30 N, in the Azarbaijan-e Sharqi Province. The elevation of the area ranges between 800 to 3200m.
The southern region has a mountainous geomorphology with deep valleys while the northern portion has gentle slopes. The northeastern portion is covered with alluvium, while the southern-central portion includes igneous rocks such as andesi-basalts and trachy-basalt of Sabalan volcano and a granodiorite bodies with contact metamorphism. Western portion is covered by granite and volcanic rocks.
The breccia and trachy-andesites of the Sabalan has altered intensively and contain pyrite and chalcopyrite. Probably there are precious metals in the lower horizons of these rocks. The volcanic rocks in the northwest area also include metallic ore minerals with intensive alteration.
The southern granodiorite is relatively unaltered and can be exploited as building stone. Metallic minerals and aplitic dykes are rare. However in the northern portion of the body, significant alteration has occurred. Here there are malachite, azurite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite and covellite in the granite body. These mineral were sampled from a 100 Km2 area. Other potentials of the area involve agglomerate, building stone, travertine, crushed stone and pumice.
