   Abstract

Varzaqan 1:100000-scale sheet is located at the north of East Azarbaijan, NW of Iran. It is at 46 30’ – 47 longitude and 38 30’ – 39 latitude. Varzaqan belongs to 1:250000-scale sheet of Ahar and four 50000-scale sheets of Marzrud, Azaqan, Varzaqan and Darana. The oldest rock units of the area are metamorphic rocks of Kleybar including slate, phylite, green schists, amphibolites and metavolcanics. They are older than Jurassic. Cretaceous facies are extended everywhere except SW of Varzaqan. 45% of outcrops of the area are composed of Tertiary rocks mainly including igneous rocks and a few sedimentary facies. A large part of Eocene deposits and facies are composed of volcanic, volcanogenic, sandstone and a few carbonate rocks. Activities occurred in Eocene mainly had an effect on the northern part of the area. In the other parts, volcanic rocks are widespread, but in the northern part, which belongs to Moghan sedimentary basin, detrital rocks like sandstone, conglomerate, etc. are seen. In some parts of Varzaqan, volcanic activities were continuous during Oligo-Miocene. These volcanic activities resulted in the formation of dacite, dacitic and andesitic breccias, and trachyandesite. In Miocene, different parts of the area were out of the sea. Due to the presence of significant rock units, Varzaqan is an area with high economic geology potential in Azarbaijan. Active mines like Sungun Copper Mine and abandoned mines like Anjerd, Juband, Aq baba indicate the mentioned potential. Regarding the geology of the area, identified reserves in Varzaqan and surrounding areas in Arasbaran Zone, exploration of porphyry, skarn, hydrothermal, and gold (intrusion-related) reserves is probable.
Based on exploration activities, 8 prospecting area are introduced:
   - Juband Copper and Zinc Abandoned Mine: direct observation of mineralization is not possible due to the collapse of the old tunnel, but samples taken from the depot near the tunnel show significant grades of zinc, copper and gold.
   - Aq Baba Copper and Zinc Abandoned Mine: There are some traces of old excavations and analysis of collected samples show copper and zinc mineralization.
   - Nabijan copper and gold (intrusion-related) indices: geophysical studies indicate the continuity of mineralization up to 90m depth (coring may show its exact condition)
   - Mazgar gold and copper indices: It is a gold-bearing CU-skarn. Cu grade is 1% and Au grade is 2gr/ton in samples.
   - South Anjerd gold index: Gold mineralization is seen in some altered rocks. Au grade is less than 3gr/ton.
   - Shiver-daq batholith zone in the eastern part of Varzaqan: Shiver-daq batholith zone is of economic value and includes Mazra’e and Anjerd skarns, South Anjerd gold-bearing alteration and Shiver-daq silica veins.
   - In the eastern part of Mardan Qom at NW of Varzaqan, intrusion of a diorite stock resulted in the formation of copper-bearing skarns in its contact with calcareous units.
   - North part of Kerengan at W of Varzaghan: Here, a microdiorite stock attributed to Oligocene resulted in the formation of copper skarns and alteration zones in the margins
More surveys may result in the exploration of new deposits.
