" Project of Preliminary Exploration and Mineral Prospection of Iron, Gold, Copper and Decorative rocks in Qayen County" was concluded between Industries and Mines Organization of Southern Khorasan Province and Zarnab Consulting Engineers Co. based on the contract 1031/85/2544 dated 85/01/29.
Gazik exploration zone with an area of 135 km2 is located 22km north east of Asadabad and 118 km south east of Qayen.It is structurally situated in the flysch zone of east of Iran with the following major rock units:
The rocks forming ophiolitic complex (Lower Cretaceous to the Upper one), turbiditic sandstone and shale deposits (Lower Cretaceous), biosparitic limestone (Paleocene- Lower Cretaceous), Eocene volcanics, masses and microdiorite dikes to microdiorite quartz (Oligocene-Miocene) and sedimentary-volcanic rocks (Miocene-Pliocene-quartz).
The under study area is part of a quite crushed zone. The existing major faults are of a NW-SE trend synthetic with the ophiolitic and intrusive rocks of Oligocene-Miocene.
Different kinds of faults can be grouped into 3 in terms of their direction and mechanism:
1- Long faults with NW-SE trend that have made conspicuous displacements and caused various units to adjoin.
2-Drag faults with NW-SE and NNE-SSW trend along which microdiorite dikes have been able to intrude.
3- Minor and synthetic faults with NE-SW and NNE-SSW dominant trend spreading some hundred meters to about 2 kilometers that sometimes have been filled with listvenites.
Small altered zones are lying in a scattered manner within different ophiolitic parts, especially in metamorphic flysch.There are some traces of propylitic alteration in radiolarite unit. Of course here, traces of allogenic copper mineralization were occasionally found inside the stream.
