In terms of administrative divisions, Shams-e Arab exploration area with an area of about 100 hectares is located in Kohkilooye and Boyer Ahmad province, Gachsaran region between northern latitudes 3362000 to 3364000 and eastern longitudes 466000 and 468000.Dogonbadan situated in 12km southeast of the region is the nearest county to it.
Three geological units are totally separable here:
1- Gachsaran formation including a sequence of layers of gypsum, red and greenish grey marls of lower Miocene.
2- Mishan formation including greenish grey marls and some thin interbeds of fossil bearing marly of middle Miocene.
3- Alluvial sediments including fluvial [Qal] and alluvial [Qt2] ones.
Structurally speaking the study area lies in the folded Zagros zone with general trend of NE-SW.However, the elasticity of gypsum layers and the actions of the existing formations have caused many changes in slope and trend of layers mainly composed of a sequence of gypsum and marl related to Gachsaran and Mishan formations. The slope of the layers is mostly overturned and varies between 50 to 880 degrees towards the east to northeast. Moreover, in some parts this slope is normal between 20 to 850.The general trend of layers is north, NE-S and southwest while in the northeast and south parts the E-W one is quite noticeable.
The most important textures in gypsum are fibrous, laminated, compressed, crystallized and colloform ones.
