Geography and Political Divisions
Golestan is located at 35° 47’ - 28° 8’ N latitude and 53° 30’ - 56° 10’ E longitude and covers about 2043.7 square kilometers. It borders Turkmenistan to the north, Semnan to the south, Mazandaran to the west and Khorasan to the east. Gorgan is the center of Golestan that shares border with Aq Ghola to the north, Semnan to the south, Aliabad Katoul to the east and Kordkouy to the west. Most parts of Golestan are usually mild, but Gorgan plain has a semiarid and hot climate due to its adjacency to Turkmenistan Desert.
Geotourism and Ecotourism
- Golestan has unique landscapes owing to its ecological variety and natural geographical structures. There so many permanent rivers, for example Atrak, Gorganroud,Agh Band, Neka, Gonbad-e-Kavous, etc.
Neka River, from Arischal (at 36km of southeastern Gorgan) at Yazdki Mountain to Caspian Sea, is about 180km long. Arischal height is 330m and its gradient is about 1.8%.
Neka begins its course at west, then alters its direction to northwest and finally flows to Caspian Sea.
