Khalilan anomalous area, located in Birjand, South Khorasan, is about 70km2. The dominant tectonic trend of the study area is northwest southeast.
The major rock units found in the area are diorites, microdiorites, gabbros, microgabbros, dacites, riodacites, andesites, basalts, spilites, diabases, porphyry andesites, dolerites, altered acidic rocks, volcanic breccias, agglomerates, tuffs, listvenites, limestones, marls, conglomerates and shales.
Maximum gold and copper anomalies are respectively 2.5 ppb and 132 ppm, while ore-bearing specimens (sulfide veins) show 270 ppb Au and 7.7% Cu.
Cu and Au concentrations are low in heavy mineral samples except in two sheelite samples.
In general, some lenticular siliceous veins (thickness = 0.5-1m) are observed in the study area, mostly concentrated along a fault trending N70W to W-E, with 400m width and approximate length of 1km. The veins, possibly rootless, are hosted by peridotites that contain some sulfides and copper contamination as surficial malachite.
243 stream and 44 heavy mineral samples were collected and analyzed. After data analysis and statistics (calculation of statistical parameters of raw data and enrichment indices, normalization, correlation and cluster analysis), 144 anomalous areas were identified.
   Some first order anomalies are:
1- Sb, Ag, Zn anomalies in dacites, riodacites, paleocene conglomerates, peridotites associated with dunites, harzburgites, serpentenite ultramafic rocks in the south of Zadanbeh Bala (32o44'49" N, 59 o07'59"E)
2- Ag, Bi anomalies in porphyry andesites, volcanic breccias, volcanic rocks, basalts in the northeast of Nozar (32 o45'32" N, 59 o07'50"E)
3- As anomaly in limestones, agglomerates, tuffs, listvenites, peridotites, dunites, harzburgites, serpentenite ultramafic rocks in the west of Karzino (32o43'33" N, 59 o09'30"E)
4- Sn, Au, Cr anomalies in limestones, listvenites, peridotites, dunites, harzburgites, serpentenite ultramafic rocks in the northeast of Karzino (32o44'08" N, 59 o09'45"E)
5- Ba, Au, Cd anomalies in porphyry andesites, volcanic breccias, basalts, listvenites, peridotites, dunites, harzburgites, serpentenite ultramafic rocks in the north of Zadanbeh Bala (32 o45'32" N, 59 o07'50"E)
6- Mo anomaly in porphyry andesites, volcanic breccias, basalts, listvenites, peridotites, dunites, harzburgites, serpentenite ultramafic rocks in the north of Zadanbeh Bala (32 o45'23" N, 59 o07'54"E)
7- Ba anomaly in flysch, slates, schists, spilites, peridotites, dunites, harzburgites, serpentenite ultramafic rocks in the north of Zadanbeh Bala (32o46'09" N, 59 o08'07"E)
8- Bi, Cd anomalies in dacites, riodacites, conglomerates, peridotites, , dunites, harzburgites, serpentenite ultramafic rocks in the north of Zadanbeh Bala (32o44'42" N, 59 o07'59"E)
9- Bi anomaly in flysch, slates and schists in the north of Zinuk (32o46'41" N, 59 o09'14"E)
10- Mn, Cd, Ni anomalies in andesites, agglomerates and tuffs in Karizno (32o43'24" N, 59 o08'54"E)
