Gilan Geotourism Atlas
Geography and Climate
Gilan with different natural, historical, cultural and social attractions is in north of Iran and in the southern coast of Caspian Sea. It has borders with Ardebil in west, Mazandaran in east, Zanjan in south and Azerbaijan and Caspian Sea in north. Gilan Mountains are a part of an elevation in south of Caspian Sea; the elevation is extended from Astara Valley in north to Somamus Mountain in east, is a result of third era orogeny and divided into eastern and western parts.
Gilan has a flag-like body enclosing Western Alborz and Gilan plain (in south) and has a neck including Talesh Mountains and Caspian Coastal Plain (in north).
Gilan enjoys a mild climate (Caspian Mild Climate). Talesh Mountains extended from north to south and Alborz Mountains extended from west to east prevent Caspian seawater vapor and northwest damp winds to enter the region. High elevations cause a lot of rainfall here. High evaporation and increase of air humidity may help to temperture regulation in summers and winters esp. in plains adjacent to Caspian Sea.
