   Kame
Subject: Geology
A steep-sided hill composed of sand and gravel, originating when sediment collected in openings in stagnant glacial ice. Reference: Tarbouk, E.J. & F.K. Lutgens, (2006), EARTH, 8th edition, Pearson Education International.

   kame
Subject: Geo sciences
A low mound, knob, hummock, or short irregular ridge, com-posed of stratified sand and gravel deposited by a subglacial stream as a fan or delta at the margin of a melting glacier; by a superglacial stream in a low place or hole on the surface of the glacier; or as a ponded deposit on the surface or at the margin of stagnant ice. The term has undergone several changes in meaning, but can still be usefully applied to a deposit of glaciofluvial and glaciolacustrine sand and gravel whose precise mode of formation is uncertain (Thornbury, 1954, p. 378-379). Etymol: a Scottish variČant of "comb", a long, steep-sided ridge. Cf. esker.

   Kame terrace
Subject: Geology
A narrow, terracelike mass of stratified drift deposited between a glacier and an adjacent valley wall. Reference: Tarbouk, E.J. & F.K. Lutgens, (2006), EARTH, 8th edition, Pearson Education International.

   Karite
Subject: rock
Karite is a quartz rich aegirineporphyr.

   Karst
Subject: Geology
A type of topography formed on soluble rock (especially limestone) primarily by dissolution. It is characterized by sinkholes, caves, and underground drainage. Reference: Tarbouk, E.J. & F.K. Lutgens, (2006), EARTH, 8th edition, Pearson Education International.

   katabatic (fall) wind
Subject: The Earth
Any wind blowing downslope. It is usually cold.

   Kazanskite
Subject: rock
Kazanskite is aplagioclase bearing dunite from Kazansky mountain, Srednji Ural.

   Kelvin
Subject: The Earth
A unit of temperature. A Kelvin is denoted by K and 1 K equals 1░ Celcius. Zero Kelvin is absolute zero, or -273.15░ Celcius.

   Kelvin scale
Subject: The Earth
A temperature scale with zero degrees equal to the theoretical temperature at which all molecular motion ceases. Also called the absolute scale. The units are sometimes called "degrees Kelvin"; however, the correct SI terminology is "kelvins," abbreviated K.

   Keplerian elements (satellite orbital elements)
Subject: Remote Sensing
The set of six independent constants which define an orbit--named for Johannes Kepler [1571-1630]. The constants define the shape of an ellipse or hyperbola, orient it around its central body, and define the position of a satellite on the orbit.
